Pretty food.
Pea & Avocado Pesto Penne.
Tried it last night w/ some minor tweaks- substituted out the green beans for fresh corn from the farmer’s market.
For the pesto- used fresh basil from the farmer’s market instead of spinach, & replaced the pine nuts with sunflower seeds.
Success! It was quite delicious. Recipe found here. Make it your own!

Fried Green Tomato Sandwich w/ hot pepper jelly and red cabbage slaw.
French fries on side.
A la Queens Comfort.
The only brunch option (besides pancakes) that contained no meat. I had low expectations… but this sandwich blew my mind. There was such a kick to it.
Apparently, Queens Comfort has bangin’ mac & cheese, but I have yet to experience it.
Astoria needs more of these kinds of restaurants (locally sourced food & independent.) I won’t say this place is healthy in the slightest. It’s southern cooking at its finest- which means delicious and awful for you. However, the ingredients ARE seasonal and local. If you’re in the mood for chicken & waffles, you probably won’t find a better place in the city.
I’m still waiting for a legit coffee place in my neighborhood. Then i’d really have something to brag about to those Brooklyn folks…

CUPCAKE WARS.

This might have been the greatest cupcake I’ve ever had. No joke.

I ate one and had to go back the next day for another.

Vanilla cake (really really good vanilla cake) with French Vanilla meringue frosting. And ya know, meringue might be the key to the greatest cupcakes in existence. For one, buttercream frosting is somewhat heavy, and though decadent & delicious, one cupcake tends to leave you feeling like a fat-ass. (Prime example: Magnolia Bakery.)

But light and fluffy frosting made with egg whites and actual vanilla beans? The key! 1) to fully enjoying your cupcake, and 2) escaping the guilt of all that butter.

If you’re a fan of traditional butter cream, Butter Lane also has that option. You pick your cake, pick your frosting, and they customize it for you. Pretty neat! They use only the finest ingredients and farm-fresh eggs. Who can object to that?

I’ve had one too many un-friendly experiences at Magnolia Bakery. I once asked a baker at Magnolia if they used organic eggs, and she looked at me like I was crazy. She asked the manager because she didn’t know the answer. The manager looked at me and actually asked “would you like me to hold up an egg for you?” but he didn’t bother responding to my question. what a jerk.

The bakers at Butter Lane are nothing but friendly and helpful. They take their time with each customer & give you samples of frosting. (like, forreal?)

Au revoir, Magnolia Bakery.

Bonjour Butter Lane!

While catsitting, one of my all-time fav. gals Casey came to visit from DC. We made some glorious veggie tacos.

See her blog here for the recipe and an actually decent photo of our tacos.

Lord do I love me some tacos.

Lobster Rolls & Frozen Bananas

So sorry for the rant last night.

Anyway! I went to Smorgasburg yesterday at the Williamsburg Waterfront for the first time, and let me tell you, it was ah-mazing. After a treacherous 2 hours of trying to hop on the free ferry and failing, then taking that glorious cab ride I described in my previous post, experiencing the food fair was like a dream. Seriously, you can sample mostly anything. I sampled pickles, blondies, ice cream, oatmeal, kombucha, ginger tea; you fill up on samples alone.

My cousin and I ended up splitting a Maine Lobster Roll and we both almost cried tears of happiness as we were shoving it in our mouths.

We got pickles on sticks, and after my cuz left, I got a frozen banana. Because, I mean, if you are an Arrested Development fanatic, you see Frozen Bananas and you just gotta jump on that. I got mine dipped in sea salt and coconut. Delightful.

People look at you differently when you’re eating a frozen banana. I can’t say why.

Went to a flea market, picked up this little vintage diddy:

About to ride my bike to Williamsburg to check out some more flea market fun!

Oh, and Happy Father’s Day to all those dads. I got my dad a book on the French New Wave and I don’t think he was too thrilled about it. Oui oui.

Happy Taco Tuesday!
Over the weekend I made these shrimp tacos. (Apologies for the quality of the pic, it was really late and all I had was my iPhone.)
It was a pretty easy recipe- the hardest part was making the avocado salsa, cause I didn’t have a food processor and had to do the chopping by hand. (Not a good idea when you’re drunk and hungry.)
I’ll rate them a 7/10. They could have been more flavorful, but I made them myself, so I get points for that.
